There are a number of excellent mainstream seminars offered by several reputed management institutes. Most of these are however "organization - centred", focussed on developing competencies required for managing the organization efficiently. It is however, now been increasingly realized that despite the awareness, education, and commitment for such competencies, managers are not able to fully internalise such competencies, or actualize their knowledge, and make a significant or sustainable change in their performance levels. This obviously results in a lot of frustration not only in the managers but also within their organizations and the educational institutions.
The major thrust in Dr.Parikh's seminars therefore is on developing personal excellence and effectiveness through strategies for mastering change, converting knowledge into performance and transformative leadership. All the seminars / presentations offered by Dr.Jagdish Parikh can be independent stand-alone seminars or customized in terms of content and duration as part of any other seminar or conference according to the objectives of the organisers. |

Depending on the requirements of the participants, the focus of the following presentations could be on the individual &/or the organisation.
Managing Your Self -the essence of excellence Doing more & Feeling better Managers are now being increasingly exposed to several concepts such as `creativity', `innovation', `vision', `leadership', etc. However, there continues to be a significant gap between what managers want to do - or should do - and what they are actually doing or are able to do. This seminar helps them by providing the missing link between their `know-how', `do-how', and `feel-how' and thereby enhances their personal as well as professional effectiveness and well-being. It is a mix of knowledge, skills and attitudes. It focuses on the manager as an individual human being with his/her unique physical, mental and emotional dimensions, having multiple and often conflicting roles at work as well as at home.
Its objective is to enable the manager to contribute
effectively and progressively to his/her organization, without,
in any way, adversely affecting or corroding him / her as an individual.
In fact, to enable him/her to lead more effectively a richer,
more dynamic and increasingly more satisfying personal life in
congruance with his / her professional and public life.
A better management of the self also increases the
manager's ability to cope with stress (at the symptomic as well
as cause levels), to resolve conflict (through creative synthesis
rather than through the usual approach of compromise), to manage
change (external) and manage to change (within), to achieve sustainable
peak performance, to build effective teams, and to contribute
to organizational learning: It makes good managers better. The seminar also offers the opportunity of participating in a computerized self-assessment which enables participants to have a much deeper insight into their strengths and areas for attention. The instrument provides a 25 page confidential profile, a workbook, and pratical suggestions for further developing their untapped potential. This instrument can be used on an ongoing basis for future periodic reviews. On an optional basis a 360o
feedback diskette is also provided.
This "Seminar of Seminars" consists of conceptual
as well as experiential elements drawn from contemporary and emerging
thinking in the fields of management, neuro-sciences, psychology,
and the eastern disciplines. It offers a practical synthesis and
balance between the scientific temper of the west and the perennial
wisdom of the east. It is also tempered with the practical experience
of Dr. Parikh as a successful businessman. It is interwoven with
simple physical (executive yoga) and mental (creativity) exercises,
which can be done without requiring any special equipment, anywhere
at any time, and which could be integrated easily into one's daily
routine.
"Managing Your Self" is about "High performance dynamics:"
for making a life while making a living: developing the earning
potential of the organisation through the cultivation of the living
potential of the individuals.
Managers are now being increasingly exposed
to several concepts such as `creativity', `innovation', `vision',
`leadership', etc. However, there continues to be a significant
gap between what managers want to do - or should do - and what
they are actually doing or are able to do. This seminar on Managing Peak Performance helps them by providing the missing link
between their `know-how', `do-how', and `feel-how', and thereby
enhances their personal as well as professional effectiveness
and well being.
This seminar is a mix of knowledge, skills,
and attitudes. It synthesises the western & eastern concepts
and processes. It focuses on the manager as an individual human
being with his/her unique physical, mental, and emotional dimensions,
having multiple and often conflicting roles to perform at work
as well as at home.
There are various functional areas and processes
in any business organisation which require professional expertise
to manage them. Intelligence and experience by themselves are
not enough. Similarly, there are various `functional areas' and
processes within our `selves' which also require `professional'
expertise to manage them efficiently and effectively and reach
peak performance and sustain it.
To go beyond the level of average performance
and artificial behavior, and to achieve authentic and durable
qualities - when superior performance becomes a natural and spontaneous
behavior - it is necessary to understand and develop one's perceptions
and inner processes at deeper levels. This is what "Achieving and Sustaining Peak Performance" is about.
Mastering Change
The only element constant in the contemporary environment
is change. To remain stable with change one has to change. Such
accelerating change generates overwhelming complexity: the combination
of rapid change and complexity, described as `raplexity', creates
uncertainty: all these contribute to the growing conflicts at
all levels: societal, organisational, as well as individual. To
cope with change one needs to cultivate inner stability: to cope with
complexity one needs to experience inner simplicity, to cope
with uncertainty one has to develop inner strength: and to overcome
conflict one needs a synthesizing ability - a shift in perception
- at a deeper level.
In this seminar Dr. Parikh gives a comprehensive
overview of the major elements about the context and content of
change as well as a deeper understanding of the structure, levels
and processes of change.
Management by Detached Involvement :
Integrating Western Knowledge & Eastern Wisdom
In the context of the rapidly changing scenarios
for business and its management, what is becoming important is:
To run a business one requires knowledge and skills.
To manage an organisation one requires specific attitudes. To
lead an institution one requires wisdom. To cultivate this rich
mix of qualities and competences one needs to synthesize the "scientific
temper" of the West (Western Knowledge) with the "perceptions"
of the East (Eastern Wisdom). This is the general thrust and essence
of Dr. Parikh's approach which he describes as "Management
by Detached Involvement." The content of this seminar would be the same as in "Tranformative Management"
Converting Knowledge into Performance Managers attend several seminars, conferences, workshops and also read books and use video tapes etc. to acquire more knowledge and skills to improve their performance. However, most of them experience frustration on noticing that there is a growing gap between their knowledge and performance after a seminar or input of additional knowledge. They realise that acquiring knowledge is not the same thing as applying knowledge. This seminar on "converting knowledge into performance", focuses on enabling the managers to remove or reduce the barriers to their performance. This is done mainly by offering to them concepts and processes for transforming their attitudes from reactive to proactive, which generates the possibility of their functioning from the 'joy of doing' instead of from the 'fear of losing'. The main approach is based on professional management of the Self and visionary leadership.
Managing Relationships : the missing link Our whole life is relationships : a system of complex and ever-changing interconnections. Success and happiness are directly related to our ability to manage our relationships with people - at home, at work and elsewhere- as well as with the full range of things, events, and ideas with which we interact. How can we develop the requisite knowledge, skills, and attitudes to manage the relationships around us? This seminar deals with the concept of relationships and its growing relevance and importance in our lives and careers in the emerging scenarios. It describes the context in which we manage our relationships, namely the nature of reality, in terms of classical physics on which most of our formal education is based, as well as quantum physics, which describes the ultimate reality as a complex web of interrelationships; in terms of external elements as well as inner dynamics within the individual. It will also explain how classical physics, which implies, that 'to understand the whole, you must understand the part', has led to analytical, mechanistic, deterministic and reductionist thinking. This has resulted in separatist attitude and therefore fractured relationships - not only with our environment but also within our own selves. This seminar shows how to synthesize the technology of 'how to make a living', in our highly competitive and conflict-ridden environment, mainly based on Western expertise, with the psychology of 'how to live', based on eastern philosophical traditions. It explains that contemporary psychology has not kept pace with the accelerating technological changes that are shaping our lives today. How could this be corrected and how can one achieve meaningful and effective relationships and thereby create a sustainable balance among one's multiple roles in life? This is the focus of this seminar.
It deals with three main issues about relationships:
The word `Vision' is perhaps the most avant-garde
buzzward today in the management field, in the Conference halls,
Board rooms, and Class rooms. Unfortunately, it also happens to
be frequently misunderstood and sometimes even misused. Quite
often one finds the word vision used almost interchangeably with
the terms `target', or `goal', or `objective'. The word vision
may sound better but used in this way it does not create any difference.
Making a difference implies thinking differently, feeling differently
and functioning differently.
In the context of accelerating change, complexity,
uncertainty, and conflict, it is imperative for organisations to generate much greater strength and coherence within the organisation, to ensure not only sustainable success but even survival. The most effective and empowering element that can facilitate this,
is the creation and maintenance of a shared vision throughout
the organisation. The mission statements, strategies, targets, roles etc. flow from such a shared vision. The conventional approach is to develop a `vision statement' by using the logical / analytical pattern of thinking. This of course goes much beyond the traditional approach of `Planning' on the basis of `plus x%'. However, to cope with the current and emerging scenarios, one needs to access another level of thinking: wholistic and systemic thinking, which integrates logic and intuition.
Intuition is now not only desirable but essential. At the same time it is important to understand what is authentic intuition
as distinguished from wishful thinking. To create an inspiring vision one has to stretch one's intellect as well as access and activate one's intuition: "inner-knowing".
An effective leader in the emerging scenarios of
the nineties and beyond - doing business in the new paradigm - will need to be not only an `expert manager' and a `sensitive citizen' but also be a `charismatic person' with an inspiring vision. To be charismatic implies developing one's inner and deeper potential - physical, mental, and emotional: managing one's self efficiently and effectively ensuring not only balancing ones multiple roles in life, but also integrating, in a sustainable manner, the conflicting interests and expectations of the multiple stake-holders in one's organisation.
This is the essence of Dr.Parikh's approach to Visionary Leadership. It is a creative synthesis of intellectual and intuitive visioning - a synergy of responses to both the questions "What should and can we achieve?" (stretching the intellect) and
"What do we really want?" (accessing intuition).
Optimising Stress It is well known that excessive stress is the most
silent and pernicious `killer' in the modern world, especially for the executives who have to face the growing challenges of accelerating change, complexity, uncertainty, and conflict. It is a common experience that frequently one comes home from work physically and mentally tired and even emotionally drained with little energy or enthusiasm left for dealing with family or personal matters. For several executives, it is not always easy to get out of the bed in the morning, either because of insufficient sleep or with the thought about what one has to face at work during the day! Balancing one's personal and professional lives is becoming an increasingly difficult challenge, especially in the post-re engineering period with rising demands from one's multiple roles. All this, aggravates dis-stress.
The incidence of psycho-somatic illnesses among workers
and executives alike, is growing and this continues to be one of the most significant `cost factors', economic from the business
or organisational standpoint and psycho - social from the individual's
standpoint. The symptoms of the prevailing excessive stress or 'dis-stress' are often back-aches,head-aches,digestive upsets, even
excessive smoking, drinking, drug abuse, and sometimes depression
and anti-social behaviour. This has become so widespread that
it seems people have taken `distress' as granted, and accepted
as an inevitable part of contemporary life style! This need not
be and should not be so. It is possible to breakthrough before
breaking down!
There are a number of stress-management books and seminars available
today. These are indeed very helpful and stress-relieving.
Unfortunately, however most of the literature and seminars are
usually dealing with the symptoms and not with the basic causes
of distress. While reducing stress symptoms is essential, it is
even more important to approach stress management at the preventive
level.
In this seminar, Dr. Parikh deals with stress management at the preventive, curative and symptomic levels: to ensure not only reducing negative stress but also experiencing positive energy - not taking absence of illness as good health but presence of
wellness as real health: generating creative tension, the essence of optimum stress.
During the seminar, different pedagogical media, as
well as assessment and biofeedback instruments are used. In the content and processes there is a pragmatic, practical and balanced mix of the modern / western and ancient / eastern concepts as well as practical exercises for relaxation and energy building.
